Important Information for the First Day of School from Mrs. Mayhew

posted Aug 28, 2015, 1:05 PM by Julie Mayhew
It's almost time!! We are looking forward to seeing all our Levy Learners on Monday August 31st. First graders will be starting with a full day of school, and bus transportation will be provided. Kindergarten and preschool students will be attending for short visits with their families - please refer to the schedules that were sent home for specific times!

Kindergarten students have a staggered schedule on Tuesday and Wednesday - ONLY Kindergarten students whose last names begin with letters A-L will attend on Tuesday, and ONLY Kindergarten students whose last names begin with letters M-Z will attend on Wednesday. Bus service will be provided on these days. All Kindergarten students will come to school on Thursday and will continue to have a regular schedule after that.

All preschool students will begin their regular school schedule on Tuesday.

Thank you to all of you who attended our Open House last night - it was wonderful to see so many faces! If you could not attend, or if there was just too much information to absorb, here are some highlights:

  • The School Improvement Team worked with our staff and families last year to write a new Vision and Mission Statement for our school. We are very proud of these, because they reflect not only our aspirations, but also our deeply held beliefs about teaching and learning. The Mission and Vision shape everything we do and say, every day. You can read them on the home page of our site!
  • You can expect some things from me! I will be emailing parents every Sunday evening with updates and news that you need. I will also be calling home with GOOD news - expect a phone call when your child is "caught" being Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to Learn! I am transparent and honest in my oversight of Levy School - you will hear about everything that is happening at Levy as it relates to your child's education. If there is something you don't know about or have questions about, I want you to ask!
  • Our Title I program is funded by a federal grant - it allows us to have a reading specialist and two math specialists, as well as additional curriculum materials, in the building to support our struggling learners. We are in danger of losing our Title I funding, and you can help us by filling out the Free and Reduced Lunch Application that is in your Opening Day folder. Please fill out the form completely and return it to school even if you don't believe you are eligible, and even if you have no interest in participating in the program - there is no obligation attached to it, and all the information is kept absolutely confidential. (I don't even see it...) Thank you!
  • We need your support to make Levy the Safe, Comfortable, and Productive learning environment that we want for all children:
    • Please send children to school EVERY DAY (unless they are very sick). Every day that your child misses creates a gap in his/her learning, and there is a LOT of learning happening here!
    • Please have children at school ON TIME! Our day begins promptly at 8:45 when teachers meet children in the cafeteria. Children who arrive in the middle of or after the morning routines have difficulty settling in, and are often frustrated and confused.
    • Please keep dismissal routines consistent. Frequent changes are upsetting and frustrating to children. If you must make a dismissal change, the office requires a note when your child arrives in the morning. We cannot accommodate phone call changes unless there is an emergency. We appreciate your cooperation in assisting us with keeping our dismissals organized and stress-free!
    • Please make prior arrangements with the office to visit and volunteer! We love to see you in the building and we want to know when to expect you. If you wish to volunteer in any way, you must have a current BCI on file. Please contact our parent volunteer coordinator, Jill Calapai , for more information.
    • Please celebrate birthdays and special occasions (if you would like to) with non-food items. No food items (whether homemade or store-bought) may be sent to school for sharing with others.
  • We are embarking on a wonderful journey and partnership together - and we need to trust each other along the way. We will all make mistakes, and we can sort them out with mutual understanding and the shared goal of your children's best interests. If your child reports something that concerns you, please do not hesitate to call or email the teacher or me so that we can work together to resolve those concerns
There are a few things to remember for the first day.

Please return any paperwork that you did not fill out at Open House on MONDAY! Most critical are your emergency cards and transportation plan.

If you plan to drop your child off at school in the morning:
  • School begins promptly at 8:45. Children may be dropped off any time after 8:30.
  • The front circle of the school is for BUSES ONLY during drop-off time. Absolutely no other vehicles are permitted to travel or park in that area at that time.
  • Parents are asked to please park in the SIDE LOT of the school (on your left as you enter the driveway) when dropping children off.
  • Children must be escorted to the sidewalk outside the cafeteria by an adult. Please do not allow children to walk unattended through the parking lot. Children may not be released from idling vehicles.
  • Please keep traffic flowing one way - enter the lot from the school driveway, and exit the lot by the back ramp onto Mowry Street.
  • Staff members will be waiting at the doorways and on the sidewalks to direct your child if needed, and to offer any other assistance!
  • At 8:45 the cafeteria doors will be closed so that all our staff members can be at their locations for the start of school. If you arrive after 8:45 you must escort your child into the building through the front doors and sign him/her in at the office.
If you will be picking your child up in the afternoon:
  • The front circle of the school is for BUSES ONLY during pick-up time. Absolutely no other vehicles are permitted to travel or park in that area at that time.
  • Parents are asked to please park in the SIDE LOT of the school (on your left as you enter the driveway) when picking children up.
  • Parents may wait on the preschool ramp (adjacent to the field - look for the blue awning!) to pick up children. The school doors will open at about 3:05.
  • Children must be escorted to vehicles. Please do not allow children to walk unattended through the parking lot, or to play on or near the ramps or dumpsters.
  • Please keep traffic flowing one way - enter the lot from the school driveway, and exit the lot by the back ramp onto Mowry Street.
  • Please be prepared to show a picture ID at all times. Children will not be released to anyone without proper identification.
If your child will be riding the bus:
  • Please be patient for the first few days...the drivers and monitors are getting accustomed to their new routes, and it takes some time to work out all the bugs! Parents can help the process in the morning by being outside and ready when the bus arrives, and by being quick with any first-day picture taking! In the afternoon, please allow extra time for your child to arrive for the first few days - and again, please be outside waiting!
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please call or email me at any time!
