At the Week…

Dear Levy Families,

Updates and Upcoming Events:

  • Thank you for a great first two weeks of school! Hooray!!!

  • Our first School Improvement Team meeting will take place on Thursday, September 29 at 5:00 p.m.

  • Our first Parent-Teacher Forum meeting will take place on Monday, September 12th at 6:00 p.m.

    • Both meetings are held in the school library.

    • Free babysitting is provided for school-age children!

    • Please join us if you can - new members are ALWAYS welcome!

  • The School Store will be open for business every Friday, starting on September 16th. We will also begin our Friday boxtop and “label” collections on September 16th. A flyer will be coming home this week with more information!

  • On September 19th (Cristoline Fundraiser) packets for our first fundraiser of the year will come home! It will be due back on Oct 17th.

  • “The Ned Show” (science show) will take place during the day for your children.  It is an awesome show that entertains and educates.  It is FREE as we agreed to have a 5-10 day sale at school that benefits our own students too!

  • MARK YOUR CALENDARS - School’s Picture Day is October 18th - Dress Up!!

Some General Reminders:

  • Please fill out and return all paperwork if you have not already! Thank you!!

  • Please remember that changes to dismissal routines are discouraged - unexpected changes create stress and anxiety for children, something we strive to avoid if we can!  If you must make a change to your child’s dismissal routine, the office requires a note when your child arrives at school in the morning.

Drop-off and Pick-up Information:

  • If you plan to drop your child off at school in the morning:

    • School begins promptly at 8:45. Please be on time! Children may be dropped off any time after 8:30.

    • The front circle of the school is for BUSES ONLY during drop-off time. Absolutely no other vehicles are permitted to travel or park in that area at that time.

    • Parents are asked to please park in the SIDE LOT of the school (on your left as you enter the driveway) when dropping children off.

    • Children must be escorted to the sidewalk outside the cafeteria by an adult. Please do not allow children to walk unattended through the parking lot. Children may not be released from idling vehicles.

    • Please keep traffic flowing one way - enter the lot from the school driveway, and exit the lot by the back ramp onto Mowry Street.

    • Staff members will be waiting at the doorways and on the sidewalks to direct your child if needed, and to offer any other assistance!

    • At 8:45 the cafeteria doors will be closed so that all our staff members can be at their locations for the start of school. If you arrive after 8:45 you must escort your child into the building through the front doors and sign him/her in at the office.

  • If you will be picking your child up in the afternoon:

    • The front circle of the school is for BUSES ONLY during pick-up time. Absolutely no other vehicles are permitted to travel or park in that area at that time.

    • Parents are asked to please park in the SIDE LOT of the school (on your left as you enter the driveway) when picking children up.

    • Parents may wait on the preschool ramp (adjacent to the field - look for the blue awning!) to pick up children. The school doors will open at about 3:05.

    • Children must be escorted to vehicles. Please do not allow children to walk unattended through the parking lot, or to play on or near the ramps or dumpsters.

    • Please keep traffic flowing one way - enter the lot from the school driveway, and exit the lot by the back ramp onto Mowry Street.

    • Please be prepared to show a picture ID at all times. Children will not be released to anyone without proper identification.

  • If your child will be riding the bus:

    • Please continue to be patient...the drivers and monitors are getting accustomed to their new routes, and it takes some time to work out all the bugs! Parents can help the process in the morning by being outside and ready when the bus arrives! In the afternoon, please allow extra time for your child to arrive over the next week or so. If you have any concerns or questions, please call DATTCO at 371-2774.

A few words about drills:

State law requires all schools to conduct safety drills at various times throughout the year. By law, we must have at least one fire drill each month, and we will hold our first one this coming week.

Another requirement is that we hold a lockdown drill during the month of September. Teachers will review with their students over the next couple of weeks what to do in a lockdown situation in the classroom and in the cafeteria. Essentially, we ask our students to do two things during any safety drill: to be at volume zero, and to listen to their teachers’ directions. Toward the end of the month, we will hold a lockdown drill with the Burrillville Police Department. The teachers and children know that when the police visit our school, they are helping us to be safe and we are practicing what to do in an emergency.

We approach all of our safety drills – fire, evacuation, and lockdown – in such a way as to reassure our children that there are things they can do to keep themselves safe in an emergency, and that the adults are prepared and know what to do if something unexpected occurs. Our goal is to alleviate any anxiety children might feel in these situations.

For information at any time, please be sure to check out our new Levy website at atl.bsd-ri.net.  As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call or email me at any  time!

Have a great week!

At the Week...

Good Evening, Levy Families!

It’s the last week of school!

A great big thank you to all of our parent volunteers who came out to make field day such a special event! We had a blast, and we couldn’t have done it without you!

Here’s what’s happening this week...

Upcoming Events:

  • On Tuesday morning we will hold our annual “Moving On” event! Our first graders will board buses to SFE and WLC where they will go to visit their new schools, meet their new teachers and learn which friends will be in their classes next year! While the first graders are gone, the Kindergarten students will visit their new classrooms and teachers at Levy! This is always such an exciting day for our students - and we love to be able to send them home for the summer looking forward to being with new friends and knowing who their teacher will be in the fall!

  • Report Cards will be distributed to students on Tuesday. Children will also be receiving their SUMMER READING assignments and journals to take home. (Some of these have come home already.) Please be on the lookout for this very important paperwork!!

  • We know that many families plan to dismiss their students early on the last day - please be sure to send a note to the office if this is your intention!  Please be aware, too, that due to the “Moving On” event (above) first graders will be out of the building until about 10:30!

Some Updates and Reminders:

  • Our LOST AND FOUND table is quite full...any unclaimed items will be donated to the school nurse or to local charities on the last day of school. The table is in the school lobby - please be sure to check it this week if you are at school!

  • If you are moving at the end of this school year, please be sure to contact Mrs. Rambacher in the school office so that she can prepare your child’s records and have  you sign a release to the new school system! Thank you!

  • The school building will be open Wednesday-Friday from 6:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. If your child forgets something or is absent on the last day, you are welcome to come by and pick up their belongings! Please also feel free to call the office if there are any last-minute details that need attending to! For information whenever you need it throughout the summer, please be sure to check out our Levy website at atl.bsd-ri.net.

It seems like just yesterday that we were greeting all of you and your children for the start of the year, and I can hardly believe that it is almost time to say goodbye! This has been an incredible year of learning for all our Levy students! When I visit classrooms and see what they can do in reading, writing, and math, I am amazed! We’ve had a lot of fun along the way, too! The Halloween Party, the Thanksgiving Feast, the magician, the storyteller, the “Spring Swing” dance, Reading Week, pajama days, the Memorial Day Celebration and Brunch, and Field Day are just some of the fond memories we take away from the 2015-2016 school year.

I want to take this opportunity, before the craziness of the very last day, to thank all of our ATL families for a spectacular year. To the families of our first graders who are moving on to Steere Farm and Callahan, we wish you all the best, and we hope that you will continue to think of Levy as your home, too. To the families of our Kindergarteners, we look forward to welcoming you back to Levy in the fall!

In the words of John Lubbock:

"Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day listening to the murmur of water or watching the clouds float across the sky, is hardly a waste of time."

I wish you all a restful, relaxing, inspiring, and amazing summer vacation.

Here’s what’s happening this week...

Upcoming Events:

  • It looks like our local meteorologists are cooperating, so tomorrow we will be heading out to the bike path for our 4th Annual Quack-a-Thon! It shouldn’t be too warm early in the morning, but please do dress children in light clothing that will be comfortable for walking! Don’t forget about sturdy shoes - sneakers are strongly recommended!

  • On Tuesday our first graders will be heading out to the Capron Park Zoo. The buses will leave promptly at 9:00 - please be at school on time!

  • Thursday is FIELD DAY and we can’t wait!!! Please remember to send children to school with their bathing suits on under their clothes and with sunscreen already applied. Each child will need to bring a water bottle, beach towel, and complete change of clothes, all labeled with his/her name! Children who do not want the pizza lunch (supplied by our awesome Harrisville Water District - thank you!!) will need to bring a bagged lunch to school as well.

    • VOLUNTEERS are asked to wear blue shirts. You may come to school as early as 7:30 to begin setup - everyone is asked to please check in and be ready for the day by 8:30!

    • There will be one last organizational meeting this Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m. in the library! Please join us if you can!
